What is a Public Adjuster?

What is a Public Adjuster?

Public insurance adjusters are the only property loss professionals who work on behalf of commercial and residential policyholders. Individuals and businesses hire licensed public insurance adjusters when they need assistance filling a claim or when they feel an insurance company’s claim is incorrect.

Public Adjusters work property loss claims from but are not limited to:

  • Fire Damage

  • Smoke Damage

  • Wind Damage

  • Hail Damage

  • Hurricane Damage

  • Business Interruption

What a Public Adjustor does for you?

Public insurance adjusters are experts in the details and language of insurance policies, as well as the process of filing and adjusting claims. Commonly, public insurance adjusters have prior experience in construction or other related fields and can perform independent evaluations on the client’s property loss. They also help negotiate with commercial and residential contractors.

Many times, the process of evaluating, completing and submitting a claim is quite extensive and exhausting for any policyholders wether commercial or residential. Having an adjuster throughout the process not only protects the policyholder from pitfalls due to inexperience, but also makes the process less time consuming and less complicated for the policyholder.

Should I use a Public Adjuster?

Anyone considering filing a property insurance claim should also consider hiring a public adjuster, especially for a large value commercial or residential claim. North American Public Adjusters offer a free of charge visit to evaluate a property loss in order to help a policyholder determine the severity of damage and whether they should file an insurance claim. As a policyholder, you have nothing to lose.

Submitting an accurate and detailed claim is crucial to getting the right amount of money from an insurance company to cover a property loss. Policyholders need to claim the correct dollar amount to receive the best payment from their insurance, and hiring a public adjuster can help ensure that, after all, even the best insurance companies will never voluntarily pay more than the amount being claimed.

Commercial and Residential policyholders use Public Adjusters to help settle claims

Handling a commercial or residential property claim details is a burdensome task especially for a property owner dealing with a significant claim. Documenting and navigating a catastrophic property loss is time-consuming and burdensome. People who’ve dealt with their insurance claim experiences alone describe it as similar to a full-time job. Not only does the claim process involve complex tasks such as maneuvering legal paperwork, speaking insurance lingo and meeting with adjusters, inspectors, and contractors, it also contains labor intensive duties like listing, describing, and valuing everything that was damaged or destroyed.  In addition to the growing number of tasks, the claims process also involves the negotiation of a fair claim settlement– an already challenging tasks especially after an emotionally devastating catastrophe.

Without the experience of a public adjuster, it may also be difficult for you, the insured, to know if they are giving all that is owed under the insurance policy. With the help of a public adjuster, you may find that your insurance policy can grant you extended coverage beyond the stated dollar limits of the policy or beyond the insurer’s offers. They can also be a strong voice for you through the claim process since they can give you more insight and more negotiating leverage during your final insurance settlement. A good public adjuster can help you receive the best possible settlement that the insurance company may not want to give you when you choose to rebuild your home.

How to choose a Public Adjuster

There are a number of things a policyholder can do to make sure they are hiring a good public adjuster. The first thing they should check is whether the public adjuster can legally practice. Public insurance adjusters must be licensed in every individual state they practice in. Like other professionals, they also must be bonded and participate in continuing education, taking courses to maintain their licensure. Do not work with any other individual, such as a contractor, an attorney, or even a public adjuster, that offers to provide claim adjustment services, if they are not licensed to do so.

Public adjusters have the same background as an insurance adjuster and hold expertise in commercial and home property claims. However, there are a few key differences between the key responsibility areas of the two.

Since an insurance adjuster is on the payroll of an insurance company, they work primarily to protect their employer’s financial interests. In comparison a public adjuster is hired by the policyholder and work towards safeguarding the interest of the policyholder for their commercial or residential property. Most public adjusters also have relevant experience, training, and skill set to match that of an insurance adjuster.

Public adjusters can be trusted to:

  1. Study and Analyze policies to address any coverage-related issues

  2. Evaluate Property Damage

  3. Evaluate Contractor Estimates

  4. Review Claims

  5. Negotiate all Claim Settlements
